From Charsadda to the Sun Pakistani Researcher Turns Childhood Curiosity into a Scientific Journey in China

KUNMING, China: As a child growing up in Charsadda, northwestern Pakistan, Abdullah Zafar would often stand outside his home at night and gaze at the stars.

The tiny points of light above him sparked a simple but enduring question: What is happening beyond the sky?

Years later, that childhood curiosity took him thousands of kilometres away to China, where he has transformed his fascination with the universe into a career in solar physics.

Zafar has been conducting research in plasma physics in China since 2015. After completing his PhD in laboratory plasma physics at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, Anhui Province, he joined the Yunnan Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2021, beginning research focused on solar physics.

Today, his work centres on the mysterious and highly dynamic phenomena of the Sun — the star closest to Earth.

The Yunnan Observatories are among China's leading astronomical research institutions, with internationally recognised achievements in areas including stellar evolution, solar physics and astronomical observational technologies.

“Many people think astronomy is simply about looking at stars, but the Sun is far more important and complex than that,” Zafar said.

Far from being the calm yellow sphere it is sometimes imagined to be, the Sun is constantly active. Its magnetic field is continuously changing, and it can occasionally release enormous amounts of energy. Such events can affect satellites, communications systems and even Earth's space environment.

“In simple terms, I am trying to understand why the Sun sometimes releases energy so suddenly, rapidly and intensely,” Zafar said. “It is almost like trying to understand sudden changes in the mood of our nearest star.”

Exploring the Sun's Magnetic Secrets

One of the major areas of Zafar's research is magnetic reconnection, a physical process considered fundamental to a number of powerful solar phenomena.

To explain the complex concept in simple terms, he compares it to two stretched rubber bands intertwined with each other.

“When they suddenly break and reconnect in a different way, energy is released very rapidly,” he explained. “Magnetic reconnection is somewhat similar, except that instead of rubber bands, we are studying invisible magnetic field lines in space.”

In his recent research, Zafar and his colleagues have used numerical simulations to investigate why magnetic reconnection can suddenly become extremely intense.

During one simulation, the researchers observed an exceptionally fast reconnection event — a moment Zafar describes as unforgettable in his scientific career.

“It was the first time we had seen such a fast and explosive form of reconnection in our simulation,” he said. “It felt as though we had uncovered one of nature's hidden secrets.”

Where the Sun Meets Science

For Zafar, Yunnan has become much more than a centre for scientific research. The region has also become an important part of his life.

“Kunming's weather is amazing. It is the best weather I have experienced in my life,” he said.

The strong sunshine and clear atmosphere of Yunnan's highland environment have left a particular impression on him. Zafar jokes that his arms have received more than enough sunshine over the years.

But behind the humour is a serious scientific advantage: the region's relatively clear skies and strong sunlight provide favourable conditions for solar observation.

“Studying the Sun in a place where its presence is so strongly felt in everyday life is truly a unique experience,” he said.

A Bridge Between Two Scientific Communities

Zafar's journey from a small Pakistani city to a Chinese astronomical research institution has given him a perspective that extends beyond his own scientific work.

He sees himself as a bridge between the scientific communities of Pakistan and China.

“Scientific cooperation is not limited to research papers and data. It is also built on people, friendship and mutual trust,” he said.

His story, he believes, can also encourage young people — particularly those from smaller cities and less privileged backgrounds — to pursue ambitious scientific goals.

“Never think that your background determines your future,” Zafar said. “I am from Charsadda, and my journey has taken me all the way to China to conduct research on the Sun. If you have curiosity, hard work and patience, opportunities will come.”

From looking at the stars outside his home in Charsadda to studying the magnetic forces driving some of the Sun's most powerful events, Abdullah Zafar's journey illustrates how scientific curiosity can cross borders — and how cooperation between Pakistan and China can create new paths for young researchers to explore the frontiers of science.
