He began his journalism career with the United Press of Pakistan (UPP), the Pakistani news agency whose origins are connected with the United Press of India (UPI) operation in pre-partition India. He worked with UPP for 28 years, serving as a reporter and senior reporter and gaining extensive experience in news reporting and field coverage.
He subsequently worked with Pakistan Observer and Daily Amn, continuing his career in journalism and newspaper reporting.
International And Diplomatic Affairs
Sami Ahmed's professional experience has included extensive coverage of consulates, diplomats, foreign missions and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan. This work gave him sustained exposure to diplomatic affairs, bilateral relations, international developments and the institutional relationships between Pakistan and other countries.
In 2022, Sami Ahmed took over the editorial leadership of TradeTrend, a local monthly magazine that had been published since 1994 under the leadership of Salma Khanum.
Under his editorial leadership, TradeTrend began a gradual transformation from a conventional local monthly publication into a publication focused increasingly on international-standard coverage of diplomacy, international relations, trade, investment, business, economic affairs and global developments.
Country-Focused Special Editions
One of the major developments during Sami Ahmed's editorial leadership has been the expansion of TradeTrend's country-focused special editions.
These editions provide comprehensive coverage of individual countries, bringing together their political and diplomatic engagement, economic development, trade and investment opportunities, culture and relations with Pakistan. The approach places individual events within the wider context of bilateral and international relations.
TradeTrend has published country-focused special editions on South Korea, Japan, Turkey and Oman. The country-focused editions have become an important part of TradeTrend's editorial development, reflecting Sami Ahmed's long experience covering diplomatic missions, consulates and Pakistan's international relationships.
Transition To Digital Publishing
In July 2026, Sami Ahmed invited Arman Sabir to join TradeTrend as Managing Editor and to lead the development of its online edition.
The launch of the online TradeTrend expanded the publication beyond its traditional monthly format into a digital platform covering international affairs, diplomacy, global trade and the economy, investment, business, geopolitics, connectivity, cultural diplomacy and related developments.
As Editor, Sami Ahmed continues to contribute to TradeTrend's coverage of diplomatic affairs, bilateral relations, international economic developments, trade and geopolitical issues, while overseeing the publication's editorial direction.
